Man analyzing tire pressure by moving finger between treads

When you have no tool or gauge available and you need to know how to check tire pressure without using any tire pressure gauge in such situations, we are here to help you.

Check out Best Tire Pressure Gauge under $30

If you feeling steering hard in movements and some what taking side when you move away your hand for little while when going straight on road, there were many reasons arise in your mind triggering any issue with the tire pressure, wheel alignment or any thing worse with suspension.

You need to take your car slowly from fast lane to slow lane and try to stopover any rest point or off road if spaces available.

Your need to first check the TPMS indication if you have installed in your car. if TPMS is not installed then you need to check tire pressure first by visuals or putting your leg foot over the tire and try to suppress it.

While it’s best to use a tire pressure gauge to get an accurate reading of your tire pressure, there are a few ways to check your tire pressure without one:

Use your fingers

Press your thumb into the tire’s tread and see how much it gives. If it feels too soft, it may be underinflated.

Use a coin

Insert a penny into the tire’s tread with Lincoln’s head facing downward. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tire may be underinflated and may need to be checked.

Use your car’s technology

Some newer cars come equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that will display the tire pressure for each tire on the dashboard

Best Tire Pressure Gauge Under $30 After Discount

Why keeping proper tire air pressure is important?

Tire pressure is one the important check point when you are driving your vehicles as all your safety also depends on having standard tire pressure.

1. Safety: Proper air pressure in tires ensures optimal traction, handling, and braking performance. If your vehicles tires are underinflated then it can lead to reduced grip on the road, especially in wet or icy conditions, also increases the risk of skidding or hydroplaning. Incase the tires are Overinflated then it can make the vehicle more prone to slipping due to loosing control, particularly during sudden maneuvers or when encountering uneven surfaces.

2. Fuel Efficiency: Incorrect tire pressure can significantly affect fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, causing the engine to work harder and consume more fuel to maintain the same speed. According to the research, the standard inflated tires can improve gas mileage.

3. Tire Life: The lifespan of tires can be shortened if they are not properly inflated. Underinflated tires cause the sidewalls to flex excessively, generating heat and leading to accelerated tire wear. Overinflated tires may wear out prematurely in the center of the tread. You can extend the life of your tires and save money in the long run by keeping the air pressure in tire to recommended value.

4. Handling and Performance: Properly inflated tires provide better handling and performance characteristics. When tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, they maintain their shape and contact patch with the road, allowing for more precise steering response, better cornering stability, and improved overall vehicle performance.

5. Ride Comfort: Tire pressure affects ride quality and comfort. Overinflated tires transmit more road imperfections and vibrations to the vehicle, resulting in a harsher ride. Underinflated tires can make the ride feel bumpy and sluggish. Proper tire pressure helps ensure a smoother and more comfortable driving experience.

CONCLUSION

However, it’s important to note that these methods are not as accurate as using a tire pressure gauge, and it’s recommended that you use a gauge for the most precise measurement.

To ensure you maintain the correct tire pressure, refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual or the sticker typically located on the driver’s side door jamb, glove compartment, or fuel filler flap. Regularly check your tire pressure using a reliable pressure gauge and adjust it as needed, preferably when the tires are cold.

What does TPMS means?

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It is a safety feature in modern vehicles that uses sensors to monitor the air pressure in each tire and alert the driver if the pressure drops below a certain level. This system helps to prevent accidents caused by underinflated tires, which can lead to poor handling, decreased fuel efficiency, and premature tire wear.

Reading a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) typically involves checking the display or warning lights on your vehicle’s dashboard. Here are the general steps to follow:

Check if your vehicle has a TPMS warning light on the dashboard. This light usually looks like a yellow or red exclamation mark inside a tire-shaped symbol.

If the TPMS warning light is illuminated, it means that at least one tire’s pressure is below the recommended level.

Check the owner’s manual or the driver’s side door jamb to find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle.

Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in each tire.

Remove the valve cap from the tire and press the gauge onto the valve stem to get a reading.

Compare the tire pressure readings with the recommended pressure level.

If any tire’s pressure is below the recommended level, inflate it to the correct pressure.
After inflating the tire(s), drive the vehicle for a short distance (around 10 minutes) to allow the TPMS system to reset and re-check the tire pressures.

If the TPMS warning light is still on after inflating the tire(s) and driving for a short distance, it may indicate a problem with the TPMS system itself. In this case, it’s best to have a professional mechanic inspect and diagnose the issue.

Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual to see if it has a TPMS reset button or if there is a specific way to reset the TPMS.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated to the recommended pressure.

Turn the ignition on, but do not start the engine.

Locate the TPMS reset button or reset procedure for your vehicle.

Press and hold the reset button or follow the reset procedure until the TPMS light blinks twice or you hear a beep.

Release the reset button or complete the reset procedure.
After resetting the TPMS, it may take a few minutes of driving for the system to recognize the new tire pressures. If the TPMS light stays on after resetting, there may be an issue with the system that requires further inspection.

How TPMS works?

TPMS works by using sensors to monitor the tire pressure and alert the driver if the pressure falls below a certain level.

Types of TPMS

There are two types of TPMS: direct and indirect.

Direct TPMS

This system uses pressure sensors mounted inside the tire, usually tire valve, which transmit information to a central computer usually called ECM or ECU in the vehicle. These sensors measure the tire pressure and send a signal to the computer, which alerts the driver if the pressure falls below a certain limit. Direct TPMS provides more accurate and precise readings, but can be more expensive to install and maintain.

Indirect TPMS

This system uses the ABS (anti-lock braking system) sensors to monitor the rotational speed of each tire. If one tire is significantly underinflated, it will have a shorter overall diameter and will rotate at a different speed as compared to the other tires. The ABS system detects this difference in tires rotational speed and alerts the driver that there may be a problem with tire pressure. Indirect TPMS is less expensive than direct TPMS, but it may not be as accurate or reliable. In both systems, if the pressure falls below the recommended level, a warning light appears on the dashboard speedometer, alerting the driver to check the tire pressure and inflate the tire as necessary.

Conclusion

TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring System is one of the important feature that are equipped in almost all the modern cars, due to regulations being enforced in many countries. Some time peoples have limited knowledge about the TPMS and its functionality and they become worried about the TPMS light flashing on their car panel. We have explained the TPMS light flashing and how to reset when needed. Moreover, you need to keep monitor your tires health and identify any issues if air leakage is frequent.
